Creating Attractively With Purpose

What is happening to the good old days when everyone online had his email address and your profile information just for yourself and close colleagues now my inbox has to suffer from the weight of mails from nowhere. I wont call it spam just uninvited email campaigns.

My example starts with this bata shoe email campaign. I have never visited their website or signed up for their newsletter but bam I always find them in my inbox. I was not worried much about the emails until when today I decided that I no loger need them. I looked at the email and found the unsubscribe link at the bottom. ‘This is cool’ I said to myself. No need to worry about the newsletter anymore. But this was not the case it is far much worse. The link was dead!

what does this mean that I can not control the emails that are sent to me from bata. In this case the uninvited email campaign as much as I did not mind it turns out to be spam!

That is just one case I also found something disgusting with some facebook apps. What you can call a Facebook scam. Why should you create an app that will send messages to your friends with a stupid link.

Have you seen something like

The other bad facebook app is the profile peekers app. It seems fun to know who is tracking you but you know what! that id outlawed by facebook. Facebook does not avail that kind of information to facebook apps and an app claiming to do that should be reported. Such claims are obviously false and you get lies. If I lies that one of your friends visits your profile page 20 times a day you would start wondering what they are up to. That kind of information would rather remain unknown to give all facebook users peace of mind.

We have seen many adverts from many sites that say that you can make thousands per hour working online at home. Now, where in the world would such an employer get that kind of money to pay to everyone. Sure enough the best way to get money from you is simply to tell you that a lot of money is coming into your pocket.

My way of knowing whether there is a possibility of a scam is simply by placing myself in the boots of the person giving the offer and try and see from his view whether there is a benefit on his side. If chances are that this is not possible the forget the deal. Sure “If the deal is too good, think twice, if better, think thrice”.

Just but one example I stumbled on today is Automated Profit Package. Sure this is a popular advert that claims that Google (the internet billionaire Search Giant) would pay you loads of money when you register for their offer. Just for a go I did click on one of their adverts and I got to one very interesting “News Website”. The website claims to do investigations on ‘Work at home Programs’. Quoting the slogan:

News Daily 7 Investigates Online Work at Home Programs..

A good look at the website will tell you that this is not your ordinary news website. The banner at the top is one big Image and the links on their menubar are part of a big graphic that links to the sign up page for the so called ‘package’. The Other news section and the scroller for stories at the bottom of the post is also a graphic leading to the same page.

Now if you still would believe that this doctored site claiming to do investigations is not part of a scam then you are on your own.

The website standardmedia.co.ke is a repored attack site. This website s the rival to nation.co.ke in terms of online news but view it today with Chrome or Firefox browser and you get the alarm. I have been a victim of this once and I blamed my hosting provider for being careless. I moved to another host and things are fine.

Dont Crash Use JQuery

We have the habbit of making our blog a premature death by lack of content and inspiration the advice is to use JQuery and its Ajax functions to load whatever you wish from anywhere be it videos or just some news conrtent.
Find info from css-tricks on how JQuery can change the experience of your blog. I don’t know much aboputh these wordpress hosted blogs but I cannot add modules or edit the themes is that what is intended or is there a way around it?
Thanks to all who follow this blog you are the best 4 ever!

I have been looking around for a theme for WordPress websites. Since i want to use wordpress for as a CMS I have not got the real thing I really need. The one thing that is most abudant when using wordpress os the manay themes that can be used and they are all free. How does it feel to create a really eye ctaching wordpress theme? I was at first afraid of taking up the tasmk of creating my own theme and thus I have spent a lot of time going round looking for a theme.

Just yesterday I went through the files of the default theme and funny enough the code was so readable and simplistic and then it came to my realization the reason why many wordpress themes are so easily available: simplicity. You do not have to have great Designing Skills to create your own look for your wordpress site, you only need to know some PHP, some CSSand definitely good XHTML.

The problem with many designers at times is lack of imagination not lack of skill. Some know how in Photoshop can enable you to transform almost any good looking picture to the skin of a website.

The layouts on many wordpress powered template sites is the simple flow of tasks. The flow may be:

JPG to PSD.

Here a good photo is made into a website screenshot using Photoshop. This would be the work of a Graphic Designer.

Someone with knowledge of layers, Brushes, Effects in Photoshop.

PSD to XHTML.

At this stage we already have a static photo of the website. But it is not functional we can load it into a browser and see how it is rendered. It looks nice but it is not editable or clickable. This step is very crucial. The person at this stage should know the right tools to use. mostly i would advice him/her to use a picture manager which can edit a bunch of images at a time. This person cuts up the screenshot into various areas and replaces the static text with HTML text. He replaces the large image with small bits which can be repeated on the screen to give the same impression as the graphic. This stage also involves optimization where the images are compressed for least load time and best view on screen. This task is very major it can make the designer proud or embarrased based on the result.

XHTML to Theme

This is the final stage in the design process. The person working at this level needs much more that his/her predecessors. An in depth knowledge of the CMS being themed is very crucial. In wordpress this designer should know about posts, widgets, theme options, single posts,Error 404 pages,Dynamic sidebar, Search engine Optimization, Javascript and CSS. This stage when done professionally results in what you can term as a masterpiece.

The stages above all vary in complexity. You would find that some stages are more expensive than others. There are numerous sites that can offer you screenshots of websites as JPG files. Well they give you this for free as they do know that the task of making the JPG file an XHTML site is very complex and tiring.

The second stage is more difficult and not many sites will do this for free. Again this stage gives you more control on the end product so I think it is very crucial for one to master this stage. Use of image areas is far outdated. Good use of CSS can make the site easy to access and very appealing. Good scripting is also crucial at this stage if you can use unobtrusive JavaScript or JQuery or MooTools it is advisable. You can place slideshows and Ajax functions at this stage, in fact I would prefer the scripts being introduced at this stage as later on the developer will only have to update the sources of data to make the JavaScript effects dynamic and editable from the backend of the CMS.

With a good workout on stage two you are ready for stage three. You should be able to map the new template XHTML files to an existing theme by matching the classes and other attributes and modifying the PHP function calls to suit your new theme. In fact if the stage two designer used a set of class names that are used in the CMS default theme file it may make your work at stage three much easier.

Happy Blogging.

Well the results we have been waiting for are finally out.

The top candidates are now rejoicing while others are still not sure whether to go and check or just wait.

Bravo to the champ! Wish I had been you.

The exams unlike the recent past does not seem to have had as many cases of cheating and thus less candidates will have their results cancelled. But there are still some candidates who will still not get their results. We must agree that cheating is a vice and we can avoid it completely. I do think that the teachers who encourage cheating must have cheated themselves or are too shortsighted to see the truth. If one cheats it takes away the joy of winning.

We all can pass if we have the will to succeed. A school like Alliance  has performed well consistently due to the spirit they have. The young man from a bush school who appeared in the top ten must have given many students a challenge that the school is not always to blame for poor results. That in mind students should work hard.

The agony in results comes only to those who have their exams cancelled due to cheating. It is an embarrassment having been through four years and having nothing to show of it and on top having a label of  a ‘liar’ in national exams.

The frustration that arises comes from the poor accessibilty of exam results. To some who prefer to get the results get to them via SMS at times the system jams due to massive requests leading to stress on the subscribers. What else do you expect? You guessed it: the exam council website. Right now it is down and not accessible due to the massive traffic.

A solution to low bandwidth for the exam council website is to have other channels to share the bandwidth especially education institution websites. We cannot dwell on the same problems all the time we need to solve them and move on.

The announcement of results brought about the same old question, the place of the girl child. Poor performance of the girls was attributed to hospitalization, abuse and probably less rights. maybe true or false but what measures are taken? The point is if we uplift the girl child we should make sure that it is the girl that rises and not bringing down the boy child.

the other thing is the list of best schools. The list is gone but the ranking continues only this time not officially. The days when schools struggle to maintain a top cream of students to make headlines and leave out the rest are back, now what matters to schoools is simply to have their student mentioned in the top spots and they are done.

I do think this is unfair to the rest of the students as the competition among schools is dying out. When I was a student at Nyeri High School we always had to compete with Bishop Gatimu Ngandu Girls and Kagumo High School now the competition is almost over.  Well I should say it now: Bring back school ranking!

Just when the debate on Ongeri and School funds and calls to resign were at the climax, Ongeri can breath but just for a short while trust me.

Well in a first view of what Drupal creates for you in a basic installation may not seem as appealing to many developers but after you get to add modules in your drupal site the power and flexibility of Drupal leaves you asking why did I not use this before.

Many of  the common features in big websites can easily be added by novices in PHP using drupal.

To highlight some of the must use modules there is:

  • CCK module – this module enables you to create custom fields on drupal forms
  • Views module – this creates an interface that allows you to display content easily from your database in a variety of formats including RSS
  • Spam Module – Enables you to fight spam on your site
  • Field Modules – these are a collection of fields that can be added to your forms
  • FCKEditor – enable rich text Editor
  • IMCE – plugs in with FCKEditor to allow you to access your file system for uploads and links

You are asking why I published this post and I am using wordpress?

Well you know wordpress has its advanntages of being very easy to start using with minimum configuration though when developing becomes complex you may opt to use another CMS. If you just need to blog use wordpress it is perfect.

Another advantage of wordpress is the simplicity in building plugins. I had just read halfway the article of Writing a plugin and the information was enough for me to build an admin date displayer plugin.

Well the point is that you do not get too much engrosed in one CMS while another one has features you may need.

I have found this topic very controversial. By the look of things we must be careful of what we hear. It is no joke to be worshiping the devil.

From the number of conspiracy theories and movies on the habbits of the occult and free masonry movements we need to be very careful.

Jesus is the only true way. This statement may not be the one that most people like to hear they do not even believe that there is a God. Well, you cannot deceive yourself. The many practices done by demons are not just normal happenings.

I have looked at an email that was sent to me today and I have found various marks and symbols that all point towards such practices.

Where there is smoke there is a fire! Our youth have been following blindly not knowing what lies behind their favorite music.

A movie named “They sold their souls to Rock ‘n Roll” gives an internal assessment on the lyrics of that kind of music. Some of it is pretty obvious is directed towards worship of the devil but so is music that glorifies sex and alcohol.

Well find out for yourself and let the Holy Spirit guide you on making the bold step of following Jesus.
